If you are reading this, you probably aren’t planning to ruck 20 miles into the backcountry.

For those of us hunting from wheelchair accessible hunting blinds, the backpack serves a different purpose. It’s not about survival; it’s about transport and organization.

It’s the “briefcase” that gets your gear from the truck, onto the lift, and onto the shelf of your tower.

But pick the wrong one, and you’ll be fighting zippers with cold fingers or struggling to reach your water while seated.

Here are 10 tips for choosing a pack that works with your mobility needs, not against them.

1. Look for a “Stand-Up” Bottom

This is huge. When you get to the top of the tower and transfer off the lift, you want to set your bag down on the floor or shelf.

The Problem: Most soft packs slump over. Gear spills out.
The Fix: Get a pack with a rigid, flat bottom. It acts like a portable cabinet sitting next to your chair.

2. Front-Loading (Clamshell) is Non-Negotiable

Top-loading mountaineering bags are a nightmare in a blind. You have to dig past your jacket to get to your snacks. Look for a “Clamshell” design or “Panel Loader.” This means the front unzips all the way down. You can hang it on the wall, unzip it, and see every piece of gear without digging.

3. Silence Your Zippers

Velcro is loud. Cheap nylon zippers sound like a chainsaw in a silent winter woods.

Tip: Look for fleece-lined packs with magnetic closures or heavy-duty “silent” zippers.
DIY Hack: If you have metal zipper pulls, cut them off and replace them with paracord. Metal clinking against metal will bust you every time.

4. Short Torso? Check the Fit

If you are hunting from a wheelchair, a long internal-frame pack will hit the back of your chair or push your head forward. Look for a “Day Pack” or a “Whitetail” specific pack. These are shorter and squatter. They sit high on the back and won’t interfere with your chair’s headrest or the back of the stair chair lift.

5. Ditch the Waist Belt (Or Tuck It)

Heavy hip belts are designed to transfer weight to your hips while hiking. If you are sitting, that big buckle is just digging into your gut. Ensure the backpack has a removable waist belt, or one that tucks away behind the back panel. Comfort is key when you’re sitting for 6 hours.

6. The “Hang” Factor

In our Independence Hunting Towers, you have solid walls. You can install hooks. Choose a bag with a sturdy, reinforced haul loop at the top. You want to hang the bag open next to you so you can grab your rangefinder or grunt call with one hand, minimal movement.

7. Molle Webbing is Your Friend

“Molle” is that grid of loops you see on tactical gear.

Why it helps: You can attach your most-used gear (knife, tourniquet, flashlight) to the outside of the pack.
Accessibility: This saves you from unzipping the bag when you need something fast.

8. Hydration: Tube vs. Bottle

Reaching back for a water bottle is a lot of movement. Get a pack compatible with a Hydration Bladder (CamelBak). You can clip the drinking tube right to your shoulder strap. You can stay hydrated without ever taking your hands off your rifle or bow.

9. Weight Doesn’t Matter (As Much)

Ultralight hikers count every ounce. You don’t have to. Because you are using our solar powered hunting lift, you aren’t carrying the weight up the tree—the lift is.

The Benefit: Go ahead and buy the heavier, more durable canvas pack. Pack the extra thermos of coffee. Our lifts have a 350lb (Stairchair) to 750lb (VPL) capacity. We can handle the extra gear.

10. High-Vis Interior

Ever try to find a black flashlight inside a black bag in the dark? It’s impossible. Look for a backpack with a high-visibility orange or yellow interior. It sounds small, but when you are trying to find your gloves before sunrise, that contrast makes a massive difference.

The Bottom Line

Your backpack is your mobile command center. Don’t just buy the cheapest camo bag at the big box store. Buy one that fits your body and your hunting style.

And remember, the best gear in the world is useless if you can’t get it up the tree.
